Squawking Ravens

raven "Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?" Luke 12v24

Read about ravens feeding Elijah

(1 Kings 17v1-16)

We ravens will squawk and caw and make such a din. You will just have to give in and listen to us!
Scientists think that we ravens are very intelligent. So if birds went to school, us ravens would be top of the class!
Say'bird brain' if you like, but maybe we're so smart because of our brain size. We have big brains for our body size. Chickens weigh twice as much as us ravens but our brains weigh 5 times bigger than theirs!
Did you know that we ravens are the largest species of songbird in the world? We ravens can make a variety of sounds. And we can copy sounds too!
We call out to our fellow ravens to tell them that we have found food. And we warn them of danger. Our calls can be heard up to a mile away.
Maybe it's because we're so smart but we ravens like to play more than most other birds. We just love to roll over in the air, swooping in loops and to swing upside down by our feet from a perch.
It's such good fun to dive through the spray of a water sprinkler. We ravens even dare to play with wolves. But our young ones like to wrestle, chase and play-fight each other.
We ravens have good memories. We can remember where we hide food. And we can remember where you humans hide things too! But when your shiny keys go missing, you'll just have to search until you find where we put them!
We ravens are scavengers. We just eat whatever food we can find - small animals, fruit, seeds, eggs, dead rotten meat and garbage. No wonder the Bible calls us unclean birds!
Some people think we're bullies. But we ravens will work together to get a good meal - even if it means squawking and diving through the air to make an eagle drop its prey for us.
We ravens can live in lots of different places around the world - mountain, desert, cities, forests, and even cold Arctic.
Each spring we ravens build stick nests. The female lays 3-7 eggs in it. Our young ones hatch after 3 weeks. Both parents care for them for several months.
We ravens can live about 13 years in the wild.
Legend has it that if we ravens leave the Tower of London, then the British monarcy and the tower will fall.
