Spouting Whales

whale "For as Jonas was 3 days and 3 nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth." Matthew 12v40
Read about Jonah and the Whale (Jonah chapters 1- 4)
We whales make a big splash! We breathe out so hard that a 'spout' of air and water goes up to 30 feet into the air. We whales have lots to spout about!
There are many species of us whales alive and well in the world's oceans today. Killer whales, pilot whales, sperm whales, humpback whales, and blue whales are just some of us.
We whales live in the sea but we are not fish. We are mammals. Fish have gills to breathe. We have lungs.
We whales breathe through a blowhole in the top of our head. God made sure we could not drown when eating. He did not join our blowholes to our throats.
We must go to the surface of the water to breathe. But we can take in enough air to last us for an hour!
We whales make a big loud noise as we breathe out. When whalers see our great 'spout' they attack us. Why do you humans want to kill us? Don't you know that some of us are endangered species?
God made us whales so that our babies are born underwater tail first. And our calves can drink their mother's milk underwater without drowning!
When our whales calves are born they need to catch a breath. So their mother's help them up to the surface of the water.
God designed our whale ears to hear underwater. And to withstand great pressure when we do deep sea dives. Sometimes we dive 100 feet or more.
The sperm whales amongst us make the deepest dives of all mammals. They are known to have dived as deep as 2 km and to have stayed underwater for 90 minutes!

Blue Whales

Did you know that the largest creature alive today is the blue whale? The blue whales amongst us want to spout to you now.

blue whale
We blue whales are up to 100 feet (30m) long. We can weigh up to as much as 35 elephants. Our tongue alone weighs more than half an elephant.
We have a heart about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle and it weighs 0.5 ton! A small child could crawl through one of our major blood vessels.
We blue whales have big mouths. When we're fully grown we could fit a London bus in our mouth! But don't worry. We'll not eat you. We need big mouths to filter 4 tons of plankton and krill from the sea each day.
We blue whales are the loudest animals on earth. We can communicate with other whales over 500 miles away!
We blue whales are also the fastest growing creatures. A blue whale calf can drink 100 gallons of its mother's milk every day. It gains 8 pounds (4kg) an hour and grows 1.5 inches every day.
