Patience

Patience is longsuffering.

What does the Bible say?

Sometimes it is not easy to be patient but the Bible teaches us:

  • Be patient to all men (1 Thessalonians 5v14)

  • Be patient in tribulation (Romans 12v12). Tribulation worketh patience (Romans 5v3 cp James 1v3)

  • Wait patiently for the Lord (Psalm 37v7)

  • Be patient in prayer (Psalm 40v1)

  • Wait patiently for Christ's second coming (James 5v7)

"Ye have heard of the patience of Job" (James 5v11)

Job's Response

Job lost his possessions in one day (Job 1)

  • Cattle, donkeys and camels stolen

  • Sheep burnt

  • Servants killed or burnt to death

  • His children died when house collapsed

"the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." (Job 1v21)

Job lost his health (Job 2)

  • Satan smote Job with sore boils.

  • His wife told him to curse God and die.

"Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." (Job 13v15)

Job lost the sympathy of his friends (Job 2v11-13; 16v1-3; 19v13-19)

  • Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zopher came to comfort Job. They did not recognise him at first. They said many true things but basically blamed Job for the situation he was in.

  • Job called them "miserable comforters."

  • Children despised him and those he loved turned against him.

"For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth." (Job 19v25)

In the end God delivered Job (Job 42)

Job had said, "When He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." (Job 23v10). This came true!

Job acknowledged God's Almighty power and his own unworthiness (Job 42v2+6)

Then God blessed Job and gave him twice as much as he had before.
