"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" 2 Timothy 2v15

Charity

Bible Readings: Matthew 22v34-41; Luke 10v25-37; 1 Corinthians 13

Brotherly Kindness is shown to other Christians.

Charity is love and care for all others.

good samaritan

Read about him in Luke 10v25-37

  • Jesus told this parable to show us who our neighbour is and how to love them.

  • The priest and the Levite were religious people of the day. You can be religious without having true love.

  • The Samaritans and the Jews had no dealings with each other. They hated each other. BUT in this story the Samaritan had COMPASSION on the Jew!

  • The Samaritan helped this man, even though he too could have been attacked.

  • He cleaned his wounds, brought him to an inn, took care of him and paid the innkeeper to take care of him AND WAS WILLING TO PAY MORE when he returned again.

N.B. Jesus said, "GO, AND DO THOU LIKEWISE." Do we love people that hate us? Would we help them at great personal danger or expense? Or would we be like the religious leaders who passed by on the other side?

Who are we to love?

  1. Love God first (Matthew 22v37-38)

  2. Love our neighbour as ourselves (Matthew 22v39)

  3. Love our enemies (Matthew 5v44)

Why should we love others?

  • Love shows that we are saved (John 13v35; 1 John 4v7)

  • It is Christ's command (John 15v12)

  • Love others because God loved us (1 John 3v11; 4v11+19)

We are NOT to love the world or the things in it (1 John 2v15)

John the Apostle of Love

John was a disciple of Jesus. He heard Jesus teaching, saw His miracles and love for people. Jesus taught Him what true love was.

He wrote 5 books of the Bible and spoke a lot about love. Read his gospel and epistles to learn more about true love.

(The 5 books he wrote are John, 1,2,3 John, Revelation)
