The phrase ‘Balm in Gilead’ is found in Jeremiah 8v22. It is a healing ointment produced from resin from trees in Gilead. However, it is taken to refer to spiritual healing. The song even says:
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole
Thereis a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul
Sinner, you need the spiritual healing from Christ to save your soul. He can heal your broken sinful life and make you a new creature in Christ. Repent and He will give you the balm of His salvation.
However, I wish to address the Christian in this blog. Perhaps you have suffered some deep hurt in your life. The wound is deep and very sore. It feels like the dagger has not only been plunged into you but it has been turned by some church-going respectful people or even trusted friends. Words just cannot express the pain you feel and tears do not fix it. A long shower does not wash away the pain. A hobby, craft or fitness regime may help to dull the pain but cannot heal the hurt. You have tried to sort things out but you have been bombarded with thoughts/opinions/reasons and you just cannot find words to speak that express the deep hurt and pain you feel. You cannot debate your cause. No one seems to understand. So, you withdraw to protect yourself from more hurt.
Yes, you know Christ is the great Healer. You have tried the balm of cleansing through the blood of Christ and the balm of comfort from God’s Word….but the wound is still open and deep. You have nursed the hurt and the wound has festered. Your soul longs to experience perfect lasting healing but you cannot find it. Perhaps you even have sunk into depths of despair.
May I suggest that you take yourself to a quiet place alone, away from the distractions of technology and people, and just literally cry from the depths of your wounded soul: “Lord, the dagger is in deep; Lord, pour in Your balm whatever that is.” Take all the time you need to literally cry this over and over again. Then, imagine yourself with Christ’s everlasting arms of Love all around you. As you pillow your head on His breast you feel every heart beat of His love for you. Can’t you hear Him say: “You are my child, I love you with everlasting love, I will never let you go, I know what it feels like to be stabbed in the heart for I was pierced in the heart at Calvary for you. I understand what it is like to be forsaken by others for I was forsaken by God for you.” Dwell on His Love for it is unfathomable. Let Him pour in the balm of His Love. Ah, I just cannot put this experience into words but perhaps the hymn writer knew what it felt like when he wrote that beautiful hymn ‘Loved with everlasting love’ and especially verse 3:
Things that once were wild alarms
Cannot now disturb my rest;
Closed in everlasting arms,
Pillowed on the loving breast.
Oh, to lie forever here,
Doubt and care and self resign,
While He whispers in my ear,
I am His, and He is mine.
Did you ever notice how when a child is hurt he/she finds great comfort in his/her parents arms? As he/she feels the love of being enclosed in loving arms it helps to soothe away the pain. The love of God is far greater. His love is incomprehensible. God loves us with everlasting love.
“The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.”Jeremiah 31v3 KJV
The love of Christ is so inexplicable I cannot find words to express it. It just has to be experienced. So, pillow your head on His loving breast and feel His presence and love. Ask Him to pour in the balm of His abundant Love and to pour it in abundantly.
